What to Expect on Photoshoot Day (Let’s Take the Nerves Out of It)

Let’s be real—having your photo taken can feel a little awkward at first. You might be thinking, “What do I do with my hands?” or “Is my smile weird?” (Spoiler: it’s not.)
Whether this is your first session or your tenth, I want you to walk in feeling confident, prepped, and honestly… kind of excited. So here’s the full rundown on what to expect from the moment you pull up to your session until you get those beautiful images in your inbox.
First things first—arrive a little early.
Give yourself a cushion. I always recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early, especially if your session is at an outdoor location or somewhere new. It gives you time to settle in, check your hair, shake off the nerves, and maybe even squeeze in a quick pep talk in the mirror. (We’ve all done it.)
Pro tip: GPS is great, but also double check the address or parking situation before you leave!
No need to know what to do—that’s my job.
You don’t have to show up with a Pinterest board of poses or rehearse your “good side.” (Though, if you have one, I fully support knowing it.) I’ll guide you through natural prompts and movements that bring out real expressions and make you feel like yourself — not stiff, not staged, just… you.
If you feel awkward, I’ve got you. If your kid starts throwing grass in the air like confetti, I’ve got you. The best photos often happen in between the planned shots anyway.
Expect Movement—and Maybe a Little Adventure
No stiff vibes here. You’ll likely:
- Walk between locations or setups
- Sit, stand, maybe even lie down (if we’re doing something artsy)
- Move your hair, twirl your dress, fake laugh, real laugh, spin your kid in the air — all the good stuff
Tip: If you’re wearing heels, toss flats or sandals in your bag for in-between shots. You’ll thank me later!
For family sessions: chaos is welcome.
Listen, I have zero expectations of your kids being perfect. If they want to explore, yell, or refuse to smile — we’ll roll with it. I have so many tricks up my sleeve to win them over (plus, the candid moments always end up being the favorites). Trust me, I get it — you want that perfect family photo. But the best sessions come from relaxed, playful energy.
Tips for parents:
- Let kids be kids — the giggles, wiggles, and even pouty faces are part of the story
- Bring non-messy snacks (mini marshmallows, fruit snacks, puffs, etc.)
- A favorite toy, book, or bribe-worthy reward for after the session can help
- And breathe — I’ve worked with wild toddlers, shy teens, and even grumpy grandpas. It’s all going to be okay!
Let the experience happen. You don’t need to force smiles — you just need to be present.

Checklist

A smooth session starts before you arrive. Here's a quick checklist:

- Try on your full outfit(s) a few days before — shoes, accessories, undergarments and all.
- Iron or steam anything that wrinkles easily.
- Bring backup outfits or layers — even a jacket or statement accessory can completely switch up the vibe!
Pack a small bag with:
- Lip balm or lip color for touch-ups
- Hairbrush or comb
- Blotting paper or powder (especially helpful in the Texas heat!)
- Water + snacks (for you or the kiddos!)
- Tissues or wipes
- Safety pins or fashion tape (trust me, these save lives)

The Vibe: Relaxed, Collaborative, and (Actually) Fun
My goal is always to make your session feel less like a formal shoot and more like a hangout with someone who happens to be holding a camera and hyping you up. I’ll tell you when something looks amazing. I’ll fix your hair if it’s doing something weird. I’ll even crouch in a bush if it means getting the shot. I got you.
After the Shoot: What Happens Next?
Here’s what you can expect once we wrap:
- Sneak peek: Usually within a 1-2 days because I get overly excited!
- Full gallery delivery: You’ll receive your high-resolution images digitally within 2 weeks (depending on session type). Everything will be beautifully edited, downloadable, and ready to share or print.
- Printing tips + product suggestions: Want to turn your photos into wall art or albums? I’ve got curated print options and recommendations that make it super easy.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, this experience is about so much more than taking pictures. It’s about capturing connection, confidence, joy — the moments that make up your story. You don’t need to show up perfect. Just show up as you are.
My job is to guide you, encourage you, and create a space where you feel comfortable enough to be — so we can document something meaningful, not just something pretty. My hope is that your session feels like a breath of fresh air — a moment to pause, to reflect, and to celebrate the season you're in. Because these moments? They matter more than we often realize.
May the images we create together remind you of your light, your strength, and the beauty in simply being you.
